Navratri

In the Indian state of Gujarat, men and women gather and dance every night of the Navratri  to a dance  form   called Garba and DandiyaThis is now very popular in most parts of India and was a big event in our Hometown.  Navaratri brings in Garba or the Dandiya raas.

A dance form depicting Lord Krishna’s dance with his gopikas.. Typically danced with 2 wooden dowels / sticks decorated in festive colours. At home too, we decided to decorate our dandiya sticks ..

Creative Leaf Arts

This autumn we bring you the very first leaf art competition! Snap a photo of your wonderful piece of art made up of leaves. With so many leaves around you, you will have a hard time choosing. But once you decide, try these leaf activities for preschoolers. Let your child appreciate and enjoy the beauty of nature with these fall leaf crafts.

The best part about Autumn is the bunch of leaves that are scattered everywhere on the ground. You go to your garden or a backyard and it is full of leaves. And cleaning your backyard becomes a fun activity. These leaves in different colours look so pretty that you don’t have the heart to throw them away. Kids love playing with leaves and if your kid has a creative side, you both can get busy and make beautiful items like cards, lanterns, and crowns using these leaves. Bring out your child’s creative side and use these leaves for some fun art and craft activities that both you and your child will absolutely enjoy.

No plastic

No plastic awareness program by Red cross.

Did you know that of the 30 million tons of plastic waste generated in the US in 2009, only 7 percent was recovered for recycling? Here are 17 ways to reduce your plastic waste:

  1. Stop using plastic straws, even in restaurants. If a straw is a must, purchase a reusable stainless steel or glass straw
  2. Use a reusable produce bag. A single plastic bag can take 1,000 years to degrade. Purchase or make your own reusable produce bag and be sure to wash them often!
  3. Give up gum. Gum is made of a synthetic rubber, aka plastic.
  4. Buy boxes instead of bottles. Often, products like laundry detergent come in cardboard which is more easily recycled than plastic.
  5. Purchase food, like cereal, pasta, and rice from bulk bins and fill a reusable bag or container. You save money and unnecessary packaging.
